Gehenu Lamai (Girls) the 1978 Sinhala-language film by Dr. Sumitra Peries, has been selected for the Cannes Classics section at the 78th Festival de Cannes, where it will screen next week.
The film was restored in 4K by the Film Heritage Foundation at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in association with the Lester James Peries and Sumitra Peries Foundation. The restoration was funded through a grant under the France–India–Sri Lanka Cine Heritage (FISCH) initiative, supported by the French Embassies in Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and India.
The screening will be attended by lead actress Vasanthi Chathurani, lead actor Ajith Jinadasa, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Director of the Film Heritage Foundation, and Gayathri Mustachi, Chairperson of the Lester James Peries and Sumitra Peries Foundation.
The Sri Lankan film will be featured alongside Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri (1970), a Bengali-language film from India. (Newswire)
