Supermarket fined Rs. 2 million for overpricing Bottled Drinking Water

The Consumer Affairs Authority has taken legal action against a leading supermarket chain after it was found selling 1-liter bottled drinking water at Rs. 130, exceeding the maximum retail price.

The case was filed on May 8, 2025, at Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court No. 5 following a raid conducted at one of the supermarket’s branches in Colombo.

During the hearing, representatives of the supermarket pleaded guilty to the charge. The court subsequently imposed a fine of Rs. 2 million on the company.

The Consumer Affairs Authority said further inspections will continue to ensure compliance with pricing regulations. (Newswire)

500 – 999 ml bottles – Rs.70

01 -1.499 L bottles – Rs.100

1.5 -1.999 L bottles – Rs.130

02 – 2.499 L bottles – Rs.160

05 – 6.999 L bottles – Rs.350
