Four fatal road accidents were reported across the country yesterday, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals and injuries to several others, according to police reports.
Borella:
A tragic accident occurred on Bauddhaloka Mawatha when a three-wheeler traveling from Model Farm junction towards Kanatte roundabout collided with a jeep moving in the same direction. The three-wheeler overturned and struck a female pedestrian. The pedestrian and two women travelling in the three-wheeler were rushed to the Colombo National Hospital, where the pedestrian succumbed to her injuries. She was identified as a 58-year-old resident of Elagama, Kekirawa. The three-wheeler driver was arrested, and Borella Police is conducting further investigations.
Weliweriya
At Hingurakgoda on the Weliweriya–New Town road, a pedestrian attempting to cross the road was first struck by a motorcycle heading towards Weliweriya from Bemmulla. As the victim fell onto the road, another oncoming motorcycle ran over him and crashed into a nearby gate. The pedestrian, a 64-year-old resident of Wegalla, Bulathkohupitiya, died after being admitted to Gampaha Hospital. Both motorcyclists have been arrested as Weliweriya Police continue investigations.
Padiyathalawa:
A pedestrian was killed in Padiyathalawa after being hit by a motorcycle travelling towards Mahiyanganaya. The incident took place in the Ihala Veediya area. The injured motorcyclist, pillion rider, and pedestrian were admitted to Padiyathalawa Hospital. The pedestrian, a 63-year-old local resident, was later transferred to Badulla Hospital, where he passed away. The other injured remain under treatment at Mahiyanganaya Hospital.
Settikulama
One person was killed in a motorcycle collision at Thattankulam junction along the Settikulama–Puwarasankulama road. The accident occurred when a motorcycle turning onto a side road was struck by an oncoming motorcycle. Both riders were admitted to Settikulama Hospital, where one, a 53-year-old from Settikulama, was pronounced dead. The other motorcyclist was transferred to Vavuniya Hospital for further treatment. Police in Settikulama are investigating the case.
