Sri Lanka summons Canadian HC over Tamil Genocide Monument

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath summoned the Canadian High Commissioner on Wednesday to formally object to Canada’s approval and inauguration of a Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton, Ontario.

Herath conveyed the government’s strong opposition to what it called “unfounded genocide allegations” and criticized the monument’s construction. He warned that such actions could undermine Sri Lanka’s efforts toward national unity, reconciliation, and lasting peace among its diverse communities.

The diplomatic move follows the monument’s unveiling on May 10, which drew support from Tamil diaspora groups and Canadian officials, including Minister Gary Anandasangaree. (Newswire)
