A police officer has been arrested in Ampara for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, according to a statement from the Police Media Division.
The arrest was made on the afternoon of May 16 near Kavantissa College in the Ampara Police Division, following a tip-off received by the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Ampara Divisional Traffic Division. The suspect, who was driving a car at the time, has been ordered to appear before the Ampara Magistrate’s Court on May 23.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the individual is a police officer attached to the Aitthamale Police Station in Batticaloa. A video recorded by the OIC while the vehicle was being taken to the police station has since circulated on social media.
Following the incident, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Batticaloa has suspended the officer with effect from May 17. (NewsWire)
