Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa raised concern over the migration of health professionals during his address at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, citing its serious impact on the country’s health system and economy.
He noted that between 2022 and 2025, thousands of health professionals have left Sri Lanka, causing serious strain to the country’s healthcare system.
“726 consultants, 1116 medical officers and nearly 2800 nursing officers have gone abroad. Sri Lanka has had to bear significant financial losses after investing to produce our own health professionals,” he said.
Dr. Jayatissa called for greater accountability from destination countries and urged the effective implementation of the WHO Global Code of Practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel. (Newswire)
