The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has arrested two public officials in separate incidents for allegedly soliciting bribes.
In the first case, a unit manager of the Mahaweli Authority was taken into custody on Tuesday (21) after allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs. 20,000 from a resident of Welikanda.
The complainant states that the officer solicited the bribe in exchange for allocating a different plot of land and facilitating the approval of a land permit for a 20-perch block in the Athugala area, which had already been allocated for housing construction.
In a separate incident, the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Poovarasankulam Police Station in Vavuniya was arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs. 500,000.
The details surrounding the nature of the bribe are still under investigation.
CIABOC confirmed that both arrests were made based on public complaints and that further investigations are underway. (Newswire)
