Sri Lanka’s Minister of Health, Nalinda Jayatissa, met with the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on the sidelines of the 78th World Health Assembly of the WHO in Geneva, Switzerland.
Issuing a statement on the meeting, Minister Jayatissa said he engaged in a detailed discussion about the current situation and future plans of Sri Lanka’s health sector.
“We focused on several key areas, such as setting up 1,000 new primary health care centres in Sri Lanka, bringing in support from international organizations and donors, and strengthening our health services with the help of the WHO,” he said.
The Health Minister highlighted that discussions were also held on finding solutions to the issue of health professionals leaving Sri Lanka, based on WHO guidelines, and reviewed the progress of ongoing WHO-supported programs in the country.
Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said he extended an invitation to Dr. Tedros to visit Sri Lanka soon and join the South Asia Regional Conference to be held in Colombo in October 2025.
Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Himali Arunathilaka, First Secretary Nishanthini Victor, and several other officials also participated in the meeting. (Newswire)
