Sri Lanka plans to host World Boxing Championships in 2026

Sri Lanka plans to host one of the upcoming World Boxing Championships in 2026, the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) has announced.

In a statement on social media, the ASBC said the age group and the gender of this event have not been confirmed yet, but Sri Lanka is ready to arrange another milestone in their boxing history, taking the World Championships to Colombo.

The CEO of the International Boxing Association, Chris Roberts, the Interim President of the Asian Boxing Confederation, Aziz Kozhambetov and the President of Sri Lanka Boxing, Dr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara, met with the Sri Lankan government, the local sports authorities to discuss the upcoming World Championships.

The ASBC said the event was confirmed on the last day of the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships, which was held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo recently. 

The ASBC further said the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships was a success in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where the host country proved its potential, hospitality and provided high-quality services for all of the teams, delegations and officials.

Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, French Polynesia, IBA-India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, IBA-Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Vietnam were the 23 participating nations in this championship.

Sri Lanka earned a record number of medals in this ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships on home soil, the ASBC added. (Newswire)
