Sri Lanka is currently experiencing a significant outbreak of Chikungunya, with health officials warning of a rapid spread across key urban areas. This marks the most severe resurgence of the virus in nearly 20 years.
1. Outbreak Confirmed : Sri Lanka is facing its worst Chikungunya outbreak in nearly two decades, according to virologist Prof. Neelika Malavige.
2. Hotspots Identified: Kadawatha, Gothatuwa, Battaramulla (Colombo District), and crowded areas in Gampaha have been flagged as high-risk zones by the Epidemiology Unit.
3. Virus Strain: Genome sequencing shows the current strain belongs to the Indian Ocean Lineage (IOL), with mutations that favour spread via Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
4. Symptoms: Fever, joint pain, chills, and body aches are common symptoms. In some patients, joint pain can persist for weeks.
5. Not Contagious Between Humans: The virus spreads through mosquito bites, not person-to-person contact.
6. High-Risk Groups: Pregnant women, children, and those with chronic illnesses are advised to take extra precautions.
7. International Travel Advisories: The US and UK have updated their travel warnings, citing Chikungunya as a health risk in Sri Lanka.
Health authorities have launched a week-long dengue and mosquito control campaign in the Western Province to curb further spread. (Newswire)
