Kandy underpasses to be cleared; pedestrian use mandatory

Addressing a media briefing, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena highlighted several measures the government intends to implement to reduce traffic congestion in Kandy.

The deputy minister noted that pedestrian underpasses in the city are currently in poor condition and are not being properly utilized.

“These underpasses are unclean and occupied by unauthorized vendors and beggars. That’s why the public avoids using them. We will give them a grace period, after which unauthorized vendors will be relocated and beggars removed,” he said.

He further stated that once the underpasses are cleared, it will be mandatory for pedestrians to use them for crossing roads, and crossing at undesignated areas will be prohibited.

“Once this is in place, pedestrians will not be allowed to cross the road from undesignated areas. The law will be strictly enforced. The exact timeline for implementation will be announced soon after discussions with the Police,” he added. (NewsWire)
