Port City Colombo marked the formal handover of office space to key tenants at its Business Centre during a ceremony held Friday.

Officials in attendance included Chen Zhong, deputy general manager of China Communications Construction Group; Harsha Amarasekera, chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission; Bai Yinzhan, chairman of China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC); Sulakshana Jayawardena, director general of corporate affairs at the Ministry of Finance; and Xiong Hongfeng, managing director of CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd.

The Business Centre, which began construction in March 2024, includes nine low-rise buildings designed to host IT and commercial operations. It represents a US$5 million foreign direct investment by CHEC, a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC). CHEC has invested approximately US$1.4 billion in the broader Port City Colombo development, the largest foreign direct investment and public-private partnership in Sri Lanka to date.

Eighty percent of the Business Centre’s office space has been leased to Authorised Persons approved by the Colombo Port City Economic Commission. These tenants will benefit from the Special Economic Zone’s fiscal and non-fiscal incentives.

CCCC, a Fortune 500 firm with operations in 145 countries, has been active in Sri Lanka through CHEC since 1998. The company said the Business Centre launch signals the start of operational commercial activity within the Port City Colombo Special Economic Zone and aims to boost investor confidence in the region.
