A 34-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after reportedly beheading his pregnant wife and surrendering to police with her severed head.
The incident occurred in Puliyankulam, Vavuniya, where the suspect allegedly used a sharp weapon to kill his 32-year-old wife, Sugirdaran Rajun Swarnalatha, a school teacher at a government primary school in Nainamadu.
Police said the suspect arrived at the Puliyankulam Police Station early in the morning on a scooter, carrying the severed head. He informed officers he had killed his wife and turned himself in.
Investigators said the victim was several months pregnant and that preliminary findings suggest the murder may have been triggered by allegations of an extramarital affair involving the victim and a school student. Police said the suspect had received several anonymous calls accusing his wife of the affair, which may have led to a confrontation.
The woman’s body was found in a nearby forest reserve. The murder weapon has been recovered.
The suspect, a resident of Nochchikulam, is expected to be produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate’s Court. Puliyankulam Police are continuing investigations. (Newswire)
