Despite the National People’s Power (NPP) securing the most seats at the Bentota Pradeshiya Sabha with 10 councillors, opposition groups have collectively gained support to form a post-election alliance, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya said.

The opposition bloc comprised:
• Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB): 5 councillors
• Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP): 2
• People’s Alliance: 1
• Two independent groups: 2 councillors each

In total, the opposition held 13 seats—three more than the NPP.

Following talks led by Chief Opposition Whip MP Gayantha Karunathilake, the opposition parties and independent groups have agreed to form a coalition, allowing them to form a majority within the council. (Newswire)
