Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is undergoing a major upgrade in public health readiness and passenger processing capabilities through a partnership involving the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Government of Japan.

The initiative, part of the Border Health Project, supports Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited (AASL) and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation in strengthening the airport’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies and enhance traveler safety. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need to reduce contact points, waiting times, and congestion at transport hubs.

New equipment and technologies provided under the project include two ambulances—one specifically for BIA—equipped with advanced life-saving tools, a centralized digital signage system comprising 50 displays for real-time updates, and battery-operated trolley pushers. A fully equipped isolation room is scheduled to open at BIA by June 2025.

Future enhancements include the installation of e-Gates and an Automated Face Recognition System by mid-2025, aimed at improving efficiency and security. BIA is also set to receive advanced baggage screening technology, including four EDS CB C2 scanners and a full body scanner for customs inspections.

“These donations mark a milestone in the modernization of airport services in Sri Lanka and highlight the value of international collaboration to enhance public safety, passenger comfort, and operational excellence,” said AASL Chairman Air Chief Marshal H.D. Abeywickrema (Rtd.).

The Border Health Project is supported by Japan and implemented by IOM in collaboration with key Sri Lankan government stakeholders. (Newswire)
