Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake says Artificial Intelligence (AI) controlled equipment will be installed in long-distance buses belonging to the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and the private sector to ensure road safety.

Addressing the Parliament today, Minister Rathnayake said that the AI-controlled equipment will be installed in 40 buses within the next two months.

“Artificial Intelligence-controlled equipment to keep drivers alert will be installed in 40 buses from both the SLTB and the private sector within the next two months. After this, we will look at expanding it to other sectors,” he said.

Minister Rathnayake said that the ministry has opted for AI-controlled equipment as CCTV cameras will have to be monitored by humans, who could end up falling asleep on the job, thus failing to monitor drivers.

Acknowledging that Sri Lanka’s transport system needs significant improvement, Minister Rathnayake said the ministry is focusing on a comprehensive programme focused on road safety.

He added that an 85-point proposal in this regard has been formulated and will be implemented from 01 July. (Newswire)
