Batticaloa District MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam today presented a Private Member’s Bill to Parliament proposing amendments to the Provincial Councils Elections Act.
In a post on ‘X’, MP Shanakiyan said the Bill, which was taken up for its first reading, if enacted, will empower the Election Commission to call for Provincial Council elections.
“The President, Prime Minister, and other government members have repeatedly affirmed their commitment to holding these elections by late 2025 or early 2026,” he further said.
MP Shanakiyan emphasised that the government now has the opportunity to demonstrate its commitment by extending its full support to ensure the swift passage of this bill and honouring its promise to the people. (Newswire)
