Minister Bimal Ratnayake revealed in Parliament that CCTV footage linked to a key investigation of a bribery case at the Department of Motor Traffic, had been deleted.
He made the statement during the second reading of the National Transport Commission (Amendment) Bill in Parliament on Thursday.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) recently arrested several suspects on charges of soliciting bribes amounting to 4 million rupees.
According to the Bribery Commission, the suspects include key officers, among them a deputy commissioner of the Department of Motor Traffic.
“The CCTV recordings from 2 a.m. onward on the day before the arrest have been deleted. I am informing the public today because the country belongs to its people. When those who solicited the bribe were arrested, the CCTV footage that would have been reviewed had already been erased,” the Minister said.
The Minister said that corrupt officials of the DMT have begun to revolt now, assuring that the government will not yield to any pressure. (Newswire)
