Three police officers, including the Head of the Crimes Division of the Beruwala Police, have been hospitalised following an assault by a group of individuals near the Beruwala fisheries harbour.
The injured officers were admitted to the Nagoda Hospital after the incident, which occurred last night during a confrontation between police personnel and a group of people displaying flags from a lorry for poson festival.
According to police, the altercation began when two officers advised the group not to obstruct the road while carrying out a flag-hanging and lighting operation near the harbour.
The situation escalated into a heated argument, ultimately resulting in the officers being attacked. Police said shots were fired into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd and control the situation.
Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, and further investigations are underway. (Newswire)
