The Consumer Affairs Authority has seized 400 tons of substandard steel, valued at over Rs. 100 million, following several days of investigation.

The raid was conducted on June 6 at a warehouse in Negombo, where the steel had reportedly been transported at night from a manufacturing plant in Kahathuduwa. Officials launched the operation based on surveillance and subsequently took the stock into custody.

As per the Gazette notification issued on January 25, 2008, all steel bars and wires used for concrete reinforcement—including ribbed and plain bars—must carry the SLS quality certification. The Authority warned that legal action will be strictly enforced against businesses violating these mandatory standards and undermining fair market practices. (Newswire)
