The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressing serious concern over the alleged irregular release of an inmate from the Anuradhapura Prison under the guise of a Presidential Pardon.
In a letter sent today, the BASL stated that the pardon was granted without following proper legal procedures, raising suspicions of institutional malpractice and a breakdown in the prison system’s internal controls. It noted that the Presidential Media Division had clarified no such official pardon had been issued.
The BASL urged the President to initiate a full, impartial investigation into the incident and to strengthen transparency and accountability within the Department of Prisons.
The Association emphasized that the Rule of Law must prevail and called for disciplinary or legal action against those responsible for any wrongdoing.
