SJB forms Akurana PS with support of SLPP

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has taken control of the Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha with a majority of three votes. 

It is reported that the SJB and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) had joined forces to secure a majority in the election held this morning (12)

Central Local Government Commissioner Chamila Atapattu announced that Istihar Imadudeen of the SJB was elected as the Chairman of the Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha with a majority of three votes.

Meanwhile, Chaminda Thilakaratne of the United People’s Alliance was elected to the post of Vice Chairman with 18 votes.

The Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha has 30 members, but one member was absent today, resulting in 29 members voting.

Tariq Ali from the National People’s Power (NPP) ran for the position of Chairman and received 13 votes, while the NPP’s Wasantha Kumara contested for Vice-Chairman and received only 11 votes.

Following the 2025 Local Government Elections, the SJB had secured 13 seats, the SLPP 1 seat, and the  NPP 10 seats. 

Meanwhile, the opposition led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) also secured power in the Kadugannawa Municipal Council in Kandy.

Following the Local Government Election, the opposition secured a large majority and was eligible to appoint the Mayor.

Accordingly, SJB candidate Lakshitha Abeyratne was appointed as the Mayor after securing a majority of votes when the election to select the Mayor of the Kadugannawa Municipal Council was held today. (Newswire)
