The National People’s Power (NPP) today succeeded in establishing power in the Panduwasnuwara and Minipe Pradeshiya Sabhas, in which it did not receive a majority in the 2025 Local Government Elections.
The NPP was able to form the Panduwasnuwara Pradeshiya Sabha as the Sarvajana Balaya candidate was not given an opportunity to vote.
The election to establish power in local government institutions, where parties and independent groups that contested in this year’s local government elections were unable to obtain 50% of the vote, was held today as well.
Among the 8 members elected for the Panduwasnuwara Pradeshiya Sabha, the NPP secured 19 seats, while the number of seats divided among the opposition parties was also 19.
As such, the party or group that would form the ruling party in the Panduwasnuwara Pradeshiya Sabha was selected through a secret ballot held today.
At the time, it was decided to remove the Sarvajana Balaya member from the council, due to his name not having been gazetted.
Following the secret ballot, the NPP’s candidate who contested for the position of Chairman received 19 votes, while the SJB’s candidate received 18 votes.
Meanwhile, the members of the Minipe Pradeshiya Sabha met today to select the group that will form the ruling party, and 23 members were elected to the Pradeshiya Sabha.
Among them, 11 members of the NPP and 12 members from the opposition were elected. However, the United National Front member supported the NPP’s candidate running for the position of Chairman.
The candidate from the NPP, who received 12 votes, was elected Chairman, while the candidate from the SJB received only 10 votes.
At the time, the Sarvajana Balaya abstained from voting and acted independently. (Newswire)
