The post of Chairman of the Medawachchiya Pradeshiya Sabha has been secured by the National People’s Power (NPP), while the Deputy Chairman post has gone to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), following a vote held today (13).
Although the NPP emerged victorious at the recent Local Government election in the Medawachchiya PS, it fell short of an outright majority.
The NPP won 10 seats, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) secured 6 seats, while both the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and Sarvajanabala Party won 2 seats each. One seat was also secured by an independent group.
With no single party holding a majority, forming the administration required support from at least one additional member. A secret ballot was held today to elect the key officials.
At the inaugural meeting of the council, Dhanapala Wimalathunga of the NPP was elected as Chairman, while Rangana Somadasa representing the SLPP was elected Deputy Chairman. (Newswire)
