A “Plant Dansala” was held on Poson Poya Day (June 10) in front of the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, where more than 500 plants were distributed free of charge to promote environmental awareness and climate action among the public. The event, held from 12 noon to 1 p.m., drew large crowds who embraced the spirit of the day by taking home a plant and a message of sustainability.

The event was hosted by the Green Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to proactive environmental solutions. It was organized by Dileepa Samarakoon, chief organizer of the National Green Front, with coordination by Chandima Bandara Samarakoon, a well-known youth social activist.

Chief guest Dr. Pathum Kerner, leader of the National Green Front, said, “It’s a great event to participate in, distributing plants in an era where climate change has become a global challenge. The organisers have selected a great range of plants suited [to] the Kandyan climate conditions. We need more of these events to battle global warming and the adverse effects of climate change.”

“We sincerely thank everyone who participated and supported the success of this event. A special thanks goes to Hon. Diyawadana Nilame and management of the Temple of the Tooth Relic, the municipal commissioner of the Kandy Municipal Council, and the chief inspector of police in Kandy for their support in making this event possible. We are also deeply grateful to our generous donors whose contributions made this dansala a reality,” said Chrishan Jayakody, director of the Green Foundation.

The Green Foundation (Reg No. GA – 00380261) is a nonprofit organization registered under the Companies Act No. 07 of 2007. Its mission is to proactively address environmental and social issues connected to climate change while promoting sustainable development across Sri Lanka.
