Secret vote dispute halts Chairman Elections in 3 councils

Chairman elections in the Sithavaka Pradeshiya Sabha, Sithavakapura Urban Council, and Mavathagama Pradeshiya Sabha were postponed today (17) following a walkout by opposition members protesting the decision to hold a secret vote.

The dispute arose after the Commissioner in charge opted for a secret ballot to elect the Chairman, a move backed by members of the National People’s Power (NPP). However, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB)-led opposition insisted on an open vote, citing transparency concerns.

Tensions escalated when the Commissioner proceeded with arrangements for a secret vote, prompting opposition councillors to walk out in protest across all three councils.

Due to the lack of quorum following the walkout, the scheduled voting sessions were adjourned without a set date for reconvening. (Newswire)
