The National People’s Power (NPP) has established power in the Kolonnawa Urban Council during elections held today.
It is reported that a tense situation had arisen when the council convened to elect the Chairman this morning.
Following the 2025 Local Government Elections, the NPP had secured 09 seats and the opposition had secured 10 seats.
However, due to the tense situation, the 09 opposition MPs had left the chamber, while Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) Susil Kumara, who received the highest number of preferential votes, remained in the House and expressed support for the NPP.
Accordingly, the NPP’s Dhammika Wijayamuni was elected as the Chairman of the Kolonnawa Urban Council after securing 10 votes in the secret ballot held today, and Saman Seneviratne was appointed as the Vice Chairman.
Meanwhile, the opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) established control of the Kuliyapitiya Urban Council in Kurunegala and the Kahawatte Pradeshiya Sabha in Ratnapura.
The SJB, which won a majority of seats in the Kuliyapitiya Urban Council in the local government elections, secured a majority of votes in the election held today to take control of the local council.
As such, the SJB candidate Gamini Karunaratne was elected Mayor of the Kuliyapitiya Urban Council.
The SJB also secured a majority of votes to establish power in the Kahawatte Pradeshiya Sabha in Ratnapura during elections held today.
SJB candidate Guruge Shantha Priyankara was elected Chairman of the Kahawatte Pradeshiya Sabha. (Newswire)
