Supermarket fined Rs. 400,000 for Selling Non-Standard Brown Sugar in 2022

Based on complaints received in 2022, the Consumer Affairs Authority conducted an investigation into a supermarket in the Seeduwa area suspected of selling brown sugar that may have been artificially colored.

Samples were sent to a laboratory for testing, and the lab reports confirmed that the brown sugar did not comply with Sri Lankan standards.

As a result, a case was filed in the Negombo Magistrate’s Court in 2023 under two charges: displaying and offering non-compliant brown sugar for sale.

The Court yesterday imposed a fine of Rs. 400,000 after the supermarket had pleaded guilty. (Newswire)
