The Iranian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Alireza Delkhosh, has called on Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath for a discussion on the current crisis in the Middle East, caused due to the conflict between Israel and Iran.

Taking to ‘X’, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said that the Ambassador of Iran called on him to brief him on the latest situation in the region.

“I welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire and underscored the importance of sustained diplomatic efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region. I stressed that further escalation would have far-reaching implications for the region and beyond, including Sri Lanka,” he said.

Minister Vijitha Herath further said that he had also briefed the Iranian Ambassador on the measures taken by the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure the safety of Sri Lankans residing in Iran, in light of the current situation.

The discussion comes against the backdrop of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, brokered by Qatar, that appears to be holding, despite both sides accusing the other of violating the truce in the hours immediately after it was announced.

Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire that went into effect on Tuesday, though both accused the other of breaking it almost immediately. Israel said it intercepted two missiles launched from Iran, which Tehran denied. Then Israel struck back.

US President Donald Trump had then had a “firm” conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Tuesday morning, the White House said; afterwards, Israel refrained from conducting further strikes, Netanyahu’s office said.

Both Iran and Israel have since said they would respect the ceasefire as long as the other country doesn’t violate it. But ceasefires in the region are notoriously fragile, and the parties involved are still on edge. (Newswire)
