Train operations between Badulla and Colombo Fort have been disrupted today (29) following a large rockfall onto the railway line between Udawara and Demodara on the upcountry railway line, according to the Nawalapitiya Railway Control Room.

The rockfall occurred early this morning, following heavy rains yesterday evening (28) in the Badulla and Hali Ela areas, which caused a section of the hill to collapse onto the tracks.

As a result, the Udarata Menike train (No. 1016), which departed Badulla for Colombo Fort at 5:45 a.m. today (29), is currently halted at Hali Ela station. Meanwhile, the night mail train (No. 1045) from Colombo Fort to Badulla has been stopped at Demodara station, the Control Room said.

Railway workers are currently engaged in clearing the rocks from the tracks, and authorities say delays are expected in train services between Badulla and Colombo Fort throughout the day. (NewsWire)
