Govt officer and driver arrested for soliciting Rs. 10,000 bribe

An officer serving at the Office of the Registrar of Pesticides in Kandy and his driver have been apprehended for soliciting a bribe of Rs. 10,000.

According to the Bribery Commission, the suspects were arrested based on a complaint filed by a businessman from Bandarawela. 

Per the complaint, the officer was scheduled to visit the businessman’s home to inspect pesticide samples, which were part of a business registration process for manufacturing pesticides, fungicides, and plant growth hormones.

However, the officer and his driver had allegedly requested a bribe of Rs. 10,000 to pump fuel for their vehicle for the visit.

On information from the businessman, Bribery officials arrested the officer and his driver at the businessman’s residence at around 1.30 pm yesterday. (Newswire)
