Smart Drain, an innovative stormwater management solution developed by Sri Lankan engineer Dr. Nadeesha Chandrasena, has been named one of the top 10 winners of the 2025 WIPO Global Awards, a prestigious global initiative by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) – the United Nations agency dedicated to intellectual property, innovation, and creativity.
Smart Drain is a clog-resistant storm drain system designed to prevent urban flooding, even when conventional drainage is blocked by waste. Featuring a dual-layer structure, it traps solid materials like plastic while allowing stormwater to flow freely. The system also includes real-time monitoring of water levels, enabling municipal authorities to respond proactively to flood risks.
Selected from over 780 applicants across 95 countries, Smart Drain was recognized for its patented, scalable solution that addresses climate-related challenges in densely populated urban areas.
“This award puts a spotlight on homegrown innovation tackling global problems,” said Dr. Chandrasena, who has secured both utility and design patents for the invention.
WIPO’s Global Awards provide winners with international visibility, expert mentoring, and support in leveraging intellectual property to scale their businesses globally. (Newswire)
