Foreign Minister meets Chinese counterpart at ASEAN summit

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meetings in Kuala Lumpur on July 12. The two sides reaffirmed their longstanding friendship and commitment to deepening strategic cooperation.

Herath thanked China for its consistent support, especially during Sri Lanka’s recent economic challenges, and reiterated the country’s commitment to the one-China policy. He emphasized the importance of accelerating key Belt and Road Initiative projects, including the Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port.

Discussions also focused on expanding collaboration in trade, investment, infrastructure, green energy, and the digital economy. Both ministers affirmed their shared vision for a strong, mutually respectful partnership that supports peaceful regional development. (NewsWire)
