The European Union (EU) has issued a warning to the public in Sri Lanka over a scam involving an individual impersonating an EU official and fraudulently offering grants and financial assistance.
In an official notice, the EU stated that the individual in question has been approaching young entrepreneurs, claiming to provide EU grants or funding opportunities. Victims have reportedly been asked to make payments on the basis of false promises, after which the scammer disappears
“This is a scam,” the EU clarified, stressing that all EU grants and contracts are awarded strictly through official selection procedures that include the submission and evaluation of proposals.
The EU emphasized that it does not engage third-party agents to facilitate funding and never requests payments from individuals or organizations for processing grant applications or procurement tenders.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any such fraudulent activity to the relevant authorities without delay. (Newswire)
