Wild elephant struck by train dies in Gallella

A wild elephant was reported dead after being struck by a train travelling from Colombo to Batticaloa early this morning, it is reported.

According to area residents, the collision occurred around 5:30 am in the Sudu Nelumkama area of Gallella.

The elephant was found dead near the road that connects to the main Polonnaruwa–Batticaloa route.

Villagers stated that the elephant had been raiding local rice storage facilities prior to its death. 

They further stated that although they attempted to contact the Wildlife  Department when the elephant had entered the village today, they were unable to reach officials due to phone disruptions. (Newswire/ Image- Accident1st)
