Union Assurance, Sri Lanka’s longest-standing private Life Insurer, has announced the expansion of its groundbreaking Electronic Medical Examination Report (e-MER) and digital medical records initiative through a new partnership with Medihelp Hospitals. This development marks another significant milestone in the Company’s ongoing digital transformation journey, aimed at delivering simplified, faster, and more accessible life insurance experiences for customers.

Initially launched in 2023 by Union Assurance, the e-MER platform disrupted the traditional insurance-medical interface by digitising and automating medical examination reporting in partnership with Durdans Hospitals. Now, the Company has commissioned its latest expansion to include Medihelp Hospitals, a respected name in private healthcare. This significantly scales the innovation—extending its reach across a broader medical network and enhancing accessibility for customers nationwide.
With e-MER, the Life Insurance policy issuance process—previously taking up to one to one and a half working days—can now be completed in under 15 minutes. Further, by automating both financial and medical underwriting, Union Assurance has transformed the underwriting journey—delivering significant improvements in operational efficiency, decision accuracy, and turnaround times. This innovation not only streamlines internal processes but also enhances the overall customer experience, setting a new benchmark for the industry.
Rumesh Modarage, Chief Operating Officer at Union Assurance, said, “Union Assurance has consistently led the way in leveraging digital transformation to reshape how life insurance is delivered in Sri Lanka. The expansion of our e-MER initiative, now in partnership with the esteemed Medihelp Hospitals, is a powerful testament to our ongoing commitment to innovation and customer-centricity.”
“We firmly believe that the future of Life Insurance lies in intelligent integration with healthcare. e-MER is a bold step in that direction—digitising medical reporting and enabling real-time access to health data, which eliminates traditional bottlenecks and accelerates policy issuance from days to just minutes. I would also like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated teams behind this monumental effort.”
Nishantha Jayamanne, Chief Operating Officer at Medihelp Hospitals, said, “We are proud to partner with Union Assurance on this groundbreaking initiative. The integration of digital medical records into the Life Insurance process represents a new era of synergy between healthcare and insurance. It not only elevates service quality but also enhances convenience for customers —two pillars we deeply value at Medihelp Hospitals. We are excited to roll out this service islandwide, making it easier than ever for customers across Sri Lanka to access streamlined, tech-enabled insurance solutions.”
