The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Okkampitiya Police Station has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
He was taken into custody on Tuesday evening (July 29) around 5:07 PM near the Weeragas junction along the Maligavila–Monaragala road.
The arrest follows a complaint lodged by a businessman from the Gaminiyapura area in Okkampitiya, alleging that the officer had demanded bribes in connection with a sand mining operation.
According to the complaint, the officer had requested a monthly bribe of Rs. 50,000 to allow the transportation of sand by tractor without legal interference. On a recent occasion, he is accused of demanding three cubes of sand—or a cash equivalent of Rs. 45,000—for work on a new house he was building, later reducing the demand to Rs. 40,000, which was allegedly accepted.
He was arrested during the transaction and has been produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
