Opposition MP Dr. Harsha de Silva has welcomed the confirmation that US tariffs on Sri Lankan exports remain at 20%, describing it as a key step in keeping Sri Lanka regionally competitive.

In a statement on social media, the parliamentarian commended all those on the Sri Lankan side—both seen and unseen—who contributed to the outcome. He also expressed appreciation to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) for what he called an understanding of Sri Lanka’s economic limitations.

“Glad our #USTariffs are at 20% so we can continue to be regionally competitive,” de Silva stated. “Credit goes to all who worked on it on our #SriLanka side… Let’s now seriously work on breaking down the walls around us and building bridges to the world!”

Dr. de Silva emphasized the need for Sri Lanka to now move beyond tariff protection and engage more actively with global markets to drive economic growth. (Newswire)
