A court in southern India has sentenced Karnataka politician Prajwal Revanna to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping a domestic worker.
The sentencing was delivered on Saturday, a day after the 34-year-old former MP was convicted of sexually assaulting his former employee.
Revanna, a member of a powerful political family and grandson of former Indian Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, faced public backlash in 2023 after hundreds of explicit videos allegedly involving him surfaced on social media.
He had denied the charges but reportedly broke down in court on Friday and pleaded for leniency following the guilty verdict.
Revanna, who represents the Janata Dal (Secular) party—an ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP—has the right to appeal the sentence. (Newswire)
