Fostering Collaboration: COSMOS UK Engages with the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the UK

COSMOS UK had the honour of meeting with His Excellency Mr. Nimal Senadheera, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom, on Friday 1st August 2025. The meeting took place at the Sri Lanka High Commission (SLHC) premises in London, following His Excellency’s assumption of duties on 16th June 2025.

The COSMOS UK delegation was led by Mr. Shakeer Nawas – President of COSMOS UK, accompanied by Mr. Sifan Naeem – General Secretary, Mr. Hidayatullah Hannifa – Treasurer, Mr. Rizwan Whab – Executive Committee Member & Past President of COSMOS UK, Ms. Sameeha Rafeek – Executive Committee Member, and Mr. Segu Razeen – President of the Sri Lankan Muslim Cultural Centre (SLMCC – Harrow).

On behalf of the delegation, Mr. Shakeer Nawas congratulated His Excellency on his new appointment, conveyed best wishes, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage in dialogue.

Key topics discussed during the meeting included:

An overview of the inception of COSMOS UK and its key projects to date.

Presentations from affiliated organisations highlighting their missions and ongoing initiatives in both the UK and Sri Lanka.

The longstanding collaboration between COSMOS UK and the SLHC on community events such as Independence Day celebrations, Iftar gatherings, and other cultural initiatives.

The successful implementation of Mobile Consular Services in Manchester, supported by Mr. Hussain Fiyaz – Vice President of COSMOS UK, along with the Northwest affiliates. The delegation also discussed plans to extend these services to other cities, including York and Leicester, in partnership with local community members.

COSMOS UK’s active engagement with the UK Parliament, including established relationships with Members of Parliament and the imminent reconstitution of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for COSMOS (APPG COSMOS).

A range of community concerns and priorities, which were brought to the attention of His Excellency. H E responded with attentiveness and assured the delegation that he would take these matters forward.
