Officials of the Chinese Communist Party are of the view that a government must remain in power for at least 15 to 20 in order to implement meaningful reforms in Sri Lanka, according to Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva.

Silva made the remarks while discussing the JVP delegation’s recent visit to China in June, undertaken at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC). During the tour, the delegation, led by Silva, held meetings with senior CPC and government officials.

“They (CPC officials) said it will take around 15 to 20 years to implement the changes envisioned, and that means winning another three to four elections. They said we can’t make the changes we envision within five years. It took them about 30 to 40 years to transform China,” Silva said in the interview.

He said discussions with Chinese officials focused on long-term governance, party development, and economic management.

“We can’t operate like an opposition anymore. We need to be more efficient and move quickly. There is a lot we need to learn about governance, management and the economy which they’ve said they will help us with,” he added.

The delegation also explored potential partnerships for knowledge-sharing and technical cooperation with the CPC, according to Silva. (Newswire)
