Nuwara Eliya Mayor Upali Wanigasuriya says steps will be taken to capture and impound the ponies that roam freely and obstruct both local and foreign tourists, as well as vehicles entering Nuwara Eliya.

Upali Wanigasuriya noted that the owners of these ponies are only interested in earning income from them and do not take responsibility for their care and welfare.

These animals wander throughout the city, consuming food from restaurants and tourists, and some ponies are reportedly ill, the Mayor said, adding that the owners are not taking any action to treat or care for these sick animals.

He further said that the decision to impound the ponies was made following several complaints received by the police regarding the disturbances caused by the animals.

The Mayor also stated that if owners wish to reclaim the ponies that have been impounded by the Municipal Council, they must pay a fine.

He warned that if the ponies are not reclaimed, the Municipal Council will proceed with auctioning them. (Newswire)
