The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has raided a warehouse in Grandpass that had sold locally assembled gas cookers under the guise of imported gas cookers.
During the raid conducted last week (07), CAA officials had seized around 3000 locally assembled gas cookers and other equipment from the warehouse.
The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court had ordered the warehouse to be sealed following the raid.
According to the CAA, the raid had been conducted based on information that gas cookers were being locally assembled and sold without the necessary approval of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI).
The owner of the warehouse had revealed that certain parts had been imported, while others had been sourced from local vendors. However, he had been unable to provide the relevant documents to support his statement.
As such, CAA officials had uncovered that some parts had been locally manufactured, with documents also being locally created for this purpose.
Having presented facts before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court, the CAA was ordered to seal the warehouse and continue further investigations. (Newswire)
