Opposition MP Namal Rajapaksa has questioned the government’s decision to issue driving licences to tourists upon arrival, warning it could harm the livelihoods of tour guides and taxi operators.
Rajapaksa said the policy was announced without consulting key stakeholders in the tourism industry, which employs thousands who rely on guiding and transport services. He noted Sri Lanka already recognises international driving licences under existing treaties and said the privilege should be limited to such licence holders.
During recent travels across the country, Rajapaksa said he had received numerous complaints from industry workers urging the government to hold broader consultations before implementing a move they fear will have detrimental effects on tourism. (Newswire)
