Statement by Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka, for the 20th anniversary of the passing of Lakshman Kadirgamar

Twenty years have passed since Sri Lanka lost one of her finest sons — Hon. Lakshman Kadirgamar. His voice, marked by clarity, conviction, and principle, continues to resonate not only across our own political spectrum but also in the hearts of those around the world who admired his statesmanship and unwavering dedication to his country.

Hon. Kadirgamar was much more than an outstanding lawyer and diplomat. He was a visionary leader who believed in unity, dignity, and the strength of a common national identity. He championed the values of inclusion and reconciliation long before they became global aspirations. As an international civil servant, he played a pivotal role in the development of intellectual property regimes in Asia.

One of his most enduring contributions to Sri Lanka and the international community was his instrumental role in securing the recognition of the Day of Vesak by the United Nations. The adoption of Resolution 54/115 titled “International Recognition of the Day of Vesak” in 1999 not only honoured the spiritual heritage of Sri Lanka and the Buddhist world but also carried forward a message of peace, compassion, and understanding to the global stage. His quiet diplomacy and steadfast determination helped foster interfaith harmony and respect among nations.

Hon. Kadirgamar believed in the power of ideas, in the dignity of public service, and in the strength of unity. With steadfast courage, he articulated Sri Lanka’s case on the world stage, advocating for a future in which all communities could coexist free from the threat of violence. His legacy in the fight against terrorism endures as a testament to his vision for a secure and harmonious Sri Lanka.

But beyond his public achievements, what many of us remember most is the man himself — his humility, his sharp intellect, his wit, and his deep sense of duty. He brought grace and gravity to public life and showed what true patriotism looked like.

As we mark this solemn anniversary, we honour not only his legacy in diplomacy, but also his profound belief in national unity and human dignity. We cherish his commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and thereby to preserving unity in diversity in a pluralistic society. His life continues to inspire all of us who are entrusted with the responsibility of shaping Sri Lanka’s future.

As we move forward in building a “thriving nation and beautiful life” for our people, may his memory and his ideals guide us towards a unified, peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka.

Thank you
