A pilot project to reduce accidents involving long-distance buses was launched Tuesday with the participation of the private sector, introducing artificial intelligence (AI) camera systems to both state-run and private buses.

Under the initiative, 40 AI cameras will be installed to monitor driver behavior and issue alerts when necessary. The system can detect signs of driver fatigue, drowsiness or eye closure, as well as monitor compliance with traffic rules and seatbelt use. It will also issue signals to drivers and assist in bus fleet management.

The first phase of the project was launched at the Kataragama Depot under the patronage of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake. Several long-distance buses were fitted with AI cameras during the event, and the minister conducted an inspection tour of the depot. (Newswire)
