Prison hospital bribe : Top Doctor arrested

Sri Lanka’s Bribery Commission has arrested the former Deputy Director of the Prison Hospital, Dr. Hemantha Ranasinghe, for allegedly soliciting and accepting a bribe to retain an inmate at the Prison Hospital.

According to the Bribery Commission, Dr. Hemantha Ranasinghe had solicited a bribe of Rs. 1.5 million and had received Rs. 300,000.

He had solicited the bribe to allow an inmate to remain at the Welikada Prison Hospital, despite having completed treatment for a sudden illness in 2024.

Dr. Hemantha Ranasinghe was arrested at his residence in Pitta Kotte by officials from the Bribery Commission this morning. (Newswire)
