Small Bribe, Big Trouble: Rs. 200-a-Trip Lands Timekeeper in Jail

A timekeeper of the Western Province Passenger Transport Authority was arrested on Aug. 12 on allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 200 per bus trip.

The arrest was made around 9:47 a.m. at the Kaduwela bus stand by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

According to the complaint lodged by a conductor from the Heiyanthuduwa area, the suspect had allegedly demanded the bribe to sign the running chart of a private bus, schedule its trips, and allow the vehicle to operate all designated journeys. (Newswire)
