Specialist doctor Deepthi Fernando says there is a rapid increase in the number of patients affected by skin whitening creams in Sri Lanka.

She made the remark while addressing a media briefing held today (15) on the progress review and future plans of National Poison Prevention Week.

This year’s National Poison Prevention Week, held from 11 to 17 August, is themed: “The Danger of Using Skin Whitening Creams.”

Explaining that the skin is the largest organ of the human body, providing protection both externally and internally, Doctor Fernando emphasized that melanin pigment plays a vital role in this protective function, determining skin colour and shielding against ultraviolet radiation.

Doctor Fernando pointed out that in tropical countries like Sri Lanka, melanin is crucial for health protection, including slowing skin ageing.

However, many skin whitening creams contain harmful substances such as steroids, hydroquinone, and heavy metals. In Sri Lanka’s market today, mercury and steroids are commonly found in these products. Mercury, in particular, disrupts melanin production, Doctor Fernando said.

“This disruption leads to a range of health issues. The primary concern is the inhibition of melanin and the absorption of toxic chemicals from these creams into the body. Long-term absorption can result in accumulation, potentially impairing the nervous system and kidney function. Neurological effects may include muscle weakness, and if a pregnant woman uses mercury-containing creams, the toxins can transfer through her bloodstream to the fetus, possibly causing developmental delays. Even during breastfeeding, these toxins can be transmitted to the child. Steroids pose similar risks. When applied in high concentrations, they are absorbed into the body without regulation. This can thin the skin, cause stretch marks, and, with prolonged use, increase the risk of diabetes, Doctor Fernando further revealed. (Newswire)
