CEB posts Rs. 5.3 Bn profit in June Quarter

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has reported a profit of Rs. 5.31 billion for the financial quarter ending June 30, 2025.

This marks a significant turnaround, considering the Board recorded a loss of Rs. 18.47 billion in the previous quarter ending March 31, 2025.

Analysts attribute this recovery to the electricity tariff revision implemented in June 2025, which enabled the CEB to return to a path of profitability.

However, when compared to the Rs. 34.53 billion profit recorded in the June 2024 quarter, the current quarter’s profit reflects an 85% decline.

Following the current government’s assumption of power, electricity tariffs were reduced by approximately 20% in January 2025—a move that largely contributed to the loss reported in the March 2025 quarter.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had also stated that Sri Lanka must reinstate cost-reflective electricity pricing to secure the next tranche of its Extended Fund Facility program.

Accordingly, a tariff adjustment was implemented in June 2025. (Newswire)
